Conversation Starters

Hi families!

Have you ever forgotten something before? We all do sometimes, right? This week’s story is about the time that the Israelites got anxious and forgot God’s promises to them and built an idol to worship instead. I find that we all get anxious, forget we are loved, and do things that get us into trouble sometimes. The greatest gift though is that nothing we do can tear us away from God’s love. As you read this story with your children this week, focus on forgiveness, the power of prayer, and helping them remember just how much they are loved by you and by God.

You’re doing great! Hang in there!

LET’S READ THE STORY AND THINK ABOUT IT

  • How do you feel about the story of the golden calf or about any part of the Israelites wandering in the wilderness?
  • What does it say about God that God parted the Red Sea through which the Israelites could pass out of Egypt, that God guided them as they travelled by a cloud by day and pillar of flame by night, and that God gave them manna bread and meat to eat and water from the rock to drink as they were in the wilderness?
  • That God was committed to the Israelites and took care of them.
  • That God kept God's promise of bringing them to the promised land.
  • That God wouldn't let them die out in the wilderness.
  • That God is very powerful.
  • God can be trusted.
  • How would you feel if you were an Israelite wandering the wilderness? Would it be easy to trust God and why? Would it be hard?
